Anna Maria Schönrock studied fine arts at The Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg, under Professor Ralph Fleck , receiving her MFA in 2012.
In her work, she states, she primarily examines presences and absences and the traces left behind, where and how this takes place, how they are defined, how they are transformed or altered, and what they may mean.
Touching is not experienced only by the sense of touch, and both touching and being touched, she indicates, places us in a state of presence, of being, as we enter an interrelationship with our environment, where we feel and sense, where we perceive. Our counterpart, a person, an object, or the environment in general, comes to exist through the act of touching, as we come to exist as well, by our surroundings. The touch itself, she explains, whether through the sense of touch or other senses, is always temporary, and in that presence resides their absence. But when it is present, it leaves a trace in the receiver, yet as soon as it leaves, or becomes an absence, the trace left behind becomes a new presence, but it has been altered.
These phenomena are examined in her work, and it also allows her, she claims, to examine her own work like a two-dimensional image that when it is observed may activate traces that in turn create certain experiences in the observer.
More of her work may be found on her website and on her IG account.

Explorers have been an inspiration for me. I think of men like Ernest Shackleton, who not only made an incredible journey, but continued with it when he knew it was doomed to failure. …As a painter, I find myself attracted to the incredible risks these explorers, of all types, take. It encourages me to take risks. (Anna Maria Schönrock)
